Quilting Ideas for 2 Fabric Applique Quilts

Ideas and Inspirations

You have a finished top, you want to have a finished quilt. But, you need ideas for how to quilt it. Here are our suggestions and this should get you started:

Sailboat and Lighthouse

1. Use wavy, horizontal lines in the background to suggest clouds, wind or water. To make it more interesting, space these wavy lines closer together in the bottom third, then gradually space them further apart as you move up the sky.

We call these ghost images, and depending on the pattern you have used, these could be leaves, cattails, flower petals, hummingbirds, or stars. Put them in the background, in the frame, or both. (In this photo you see more Peacock feathers are in the background fabric on the Peacock 2 Fabric Applique.)

3. Echo quilt, either the entire background, or just in the outer frame. Space echo quilt lines about 1/2 inch apart

4. Inside the applique, add details to the image. Put veins in leaves and flower petals, add texture to the Frog with quilted circles, dripping wax in the candles on Candlelight. This photo shows the detail of a Dragonfly's iridescent wing.

5. Think about what else lives with the images in your applique - add quilted snowflakes to the Penguin or Snow Lady quilts, dragonflies on the Frog quilt, a lady bug or two on the Rose Arbor quilt.

6. Use a printed image on your fabric as quilting lines. If the fabric for your Kimono quilt has fans or cranes on it, quilt around a few of those, then repeat those images in the background or frame, in different sizes.

7. A grid can suggest a trellis for either Grapes or the Rose Arbor quilts.

8. Add additional daisies in the background for Dog and Daisy or Cat Nap quilts.

9. Do not be afraid to mix hand quilting and machine quilting. It adds great dimension to your 2 Fabric Applique Quilts. It is a great way to get your feet wet if you are intimidated to start hand quilting on an entire bed size quilt. As you can see in this close up of the Flamingo 2 Fabric Applique quilt, I quilted in the ditch by machine and then added a bit of machine echo quilting to the border. The final step was adding a bit of hand quilting to the body of the flamingos to suggest feathers as well as adding veins to the leaves and waves to the water.

I hope this has inspired you to be creative and have fun with your quilting.
